Learning To Fly – Ready For Takeoff!

Our exciting new programme for people looking for work takes wing on Monday 15th July with an introductory session from 10am-11am.  ‘Learning to Fly’ is funded by the Big Lottery and it’s very different to the usual approach to looking for work…Come and join us for a free continental breakfast with coffee and croissants and find out what it’s all about.

There’ll be a short presentation followed by a chance to ask questions and decide if the programme is right for you…if it is, great! If it’s not for you, that’s okay, our work club is running at 11:30am so you can nip across to the IT room and take the more traditional approach.

The course is a total of 5 hours per week and is aimed at people who are looking for work and feeling demoralised and stuck in a rut. It runs for 10 weeks and consists of three weekly sessions where participants will explore new ways of looking at themselves, their situation and their futures.
The learning will be in a small group, some sessions will take place in our well equipped IT room, others in the relaxed surroundings of our meeting rooms, with interactive learning, DVD and audio sessions and refreshments throughout the sessions.

All those who take part will receive a beautiful workbook to keep a record of their flight path and their journey ahead.

The weekly sessions will be as follows:

  • Tuesday – 10am-12pm  Learn to make a fortune on ebay!
  • Thursday – 1pm-3pm   Get your plan together – Development class
  • Friday – 10am-11am.  Feel Good Friday – Techniques to change your mind.

Places are limited and attendees need to commit to the full 10 weeks.  Jobcentre plus are happy for jobseekers to attend our course.

The course will run 4 times this year as a pilot scheme. Come and find out more on Monday.

Flying Lessons at Landmark?

We’re all pretty excited here at Landmark about our exciting new programme ‘Learning to fly’. We’ve received funding from the National Lottery – Awards for All strand to pilot the scheme and we’re putting the finishing touches to it as we speak.

It’s aimed at people who’ve been trying to find work for some time and don’t feel like they’re getting anywhere, for people who’ve never worked, for mums returning to the job market after raising a family and for people who were claiming long term disability benefit but due to benefit changes now need to find work.

We know how demoralising it is applying for jobs through Universal Jobmatch, how hard it is to search using computers when you can barely type and what a kick in the teeth it is every time a potential employer says no, or worse still, doesn’t even acknowledge that you applied.

‘Learning to fly’ is about looking at things a little differently. Shifting focus and taking a fresh approach. It certainly won’t be to everyone’s liking…

More details coming soon. Watch this space!

Good times at Green Light

Yesterdays Green Light session for asylum seekers and refugees was the busiest ever since we started the new Monday night format with English classes. Maybe it was because the word is getting around about how good our grub is? On the menu this week: delicious jerk chicken with rice and peas.

More than 25 people including families, children and many new faces came together to improve their English skills and share a meal and friendly conversation. The atmosphere was welcoming and wonderful with a lot of laughter and bridges being built.

Seeing the meeting room so full of happy faces was enough to beat the February chill.

Special thanks go to the STAR volunteers who work so hard delivering the English lessons, and to our landmark volunteers for being here whatever the weather to help out.

Twice as Shiny! Shine was so good we’ve started another!

Happy New year folks…Okay so we’re nearly into February! But, we have great news….This Saturday 2nd February sees the launch of our second Shine group, the cleverly titled Shine 2 ;)

As a result of our new group we’ve created another 10 places for SEN teenagers from 13 years -19 years. The new group which runs from 12:30pm-3pm is filling fast and is perfect for young people looking for fun, friendship in a more predictable format without too many crazy surprises. We found that some of the gang didn’t enjoy going off on trips last year so now we have options for the more adventurous and the less adventurous.

We are very grateful to The Bailey Thomas Charitable Fund who have awarded us with Grant funding to go towards the set up costs of our new group.

Like the original Shine group, it’s completely free giving Mums, Dads and Carers across Bradford a valuable short break  at the weekend.

As well as a new group, we’re also welcoming in our new team.

Jolene is our team leader and our new assistants are Lyndsay and Aasim. We’re sure that you’ll love them as much as we do!

If you’d like to a book place please call Nic on 07722 134544

Shine on!

Work at Landmark! Shine Staff needed.

Shine Group Leader

Shine group Assistants (see below Leader description)

We’re looking for a group leader to plan and deliver two weekly sessions for young people with additional needs. We are already running a successful group on a Saturday so we are extending to a second session.

The work is sessional and paid at £10.50 per hour for 7 hours a week.  The post is funded for 3 months initially. For three years we have received funding from Aiming High. If funding bids are successful this post will continue.

The existing group will run from 3:30pm – 6pm on Saturdays in our meeting room which is situated within All Saints Church on Little Horton Lane opposite St Luke’s Hospital. We often have trips to museums and bowling and we have lots of great equipment like Wii, musical instruments, karaoke and craft supplies.

We envisage that one of the groups will be aimed at young people who require a more predictable routine, while the other group enjoy a more varied programme. We have had to turn away young people who were not comfortable with a changing environment and this is one of our reasons for establishing a second group which we aim to run from 12:30pm-3pm.

We are looking for a proactive, creative person who can take on this exciting challenge.

You will need to be a motivated self-starter who is both reliable and mature. You should be able to engage with people from a range of backgrounds, be able to lead sessions confidently and have the energy to run two sessions back to back.

You will also be responsible for booking trips, planning the sessions, updating and involving parents with newsletters and face to face contact.

There are 5.5 hours on Saturday and 1.5 hours to complete admin tasks which can be worked from home or in the office. This can be agreed with the Centre Coordinator.

We welcome applications from all ages and backgrounds.
